Keeping It Real Monday – Online Bullying Pt. 3

February 2, 2015 by Adriel Leave a Comment

KeepingItRealMondayBullying3

I’m at the end of covering online bullying today and I’d just like to wrap up the installment with the following verses and thoughts:

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40

It’s pretty simple. Love your neighbor as yourself. Speak to others as you would like to be spoken to. Address them in a manner you would desire to be addressed. As I mentioned before, is there a time and a place for a rebuke or word of reproof? Yes. Will it feel good? No. But if done in the right spirit, from the right source, and for the right reasons, it stands a much greater chance of being received. If your rebuke is full of inaccurate assumptions, insulting remarks, untruthful statements, unfair labels, and an arrogant attitude, forget it. Obviously, your source is not Christ and is therefore not backed up by love, because God is love and the fruit of your rebuke should concur with what is pleasing to God: justice, truth, mercy, and humility (and lets not forget all the fruits of the Spirit).

Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. For each one will bear his own load. The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. Galatians 6:1-10

If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. If he refuses to listen, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Matthew 18:15-17

As much as possible, we are told to be at peace with all men. When we’re picking fights, we’re not following orders. If we’re all on the same side, why are we fighting among ourselves? And why aren’t we using the opportunities we have throughout the day to do good to one another instead of harm?

Before You Post Think No Bullying

I’ve really appreciated the time I’ve gotten to spend looking at scriptures about our speech and how we treat one another. It’s been good for me and refined my heart in the process. I hope you have a wonderful day thinking on the things God wants us thinking about and walking in a manner worthy of His calling! God bless you! :-)

Peace,

Keeping It Real Monday – Online Bullying Pt. 2

January 19, 2015 by Adriel Leave a Comment

KeepingItRealMondayBullying2I had some additional thoughts to add to my video today, so I’m just adding them here on my blog post for today.

The verses I referenced in today’s video were about the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-26) and about our words not grieving the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:29-32). I’d like to share a few more verses that I feel fit into this week’s video and I just didn’t have time to put into the video. I kind of went blank there for a minute in the video…love those “duh” moments! :-P

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matt. 22:36-40

This verse, along with the other verses, helps us get an even clearer picture of what our interactions with one another online should look like. Would you want someone treating you in the same way as you are treating them in your manner of address to them? If the answer is “no”, then don’t post it.

As I stated in the video, there will be times when we are offended or have disagreements. That’s going to happen. But if your response is simply from a place of hurt pride and/or vain arrogance, and is devoid of love, you are likely not going to respond in a way you would want to be treated yourself.

Furthermore, there are also times where a rebuke is necessary. But a rebuke need not be done openly and publicly to humiliate the individual, nor does it need to be harsh and accusatory. If you truly care about the individual you are addressing, the motivation of love will make your words understood and clear instead of just sounding noisy and loud. In addition, you will address them in a spirit of humility and in a way you yourself would wish to be addressed. It’s that simple. I doubt you would like someone calling you names or sticking insulting labels on you just because you don’t agree with them.

“…for the accuser of our brethren as been thrown down,, who accuses them before our God day and night.” Rev. 12:10

We already have an accuser. The devil himself. He is at it day and night. He doesn’t need help!! Most of us are probably unaware of what our words sound like or how powerful they are and the impact they have on others. But we need to gain a greater awareness of this fact. I certainly don’t want to be hurling insults and throwing labels at my fellow brethren just because I disagree with them over something that is an irritation to me or it’s something I see clearly as wrong for me. If it’s not a salvation issue, a doctrinal issue, etc., it’s something we should be doing a lot more praying over than talking about. As believers, we’re under enough attack as it is from the devil. What a shame when we pick up the rocks that the enemy himself uses against us and throw them at our own brothers and sisters. What are we doing? The past few months on Google Plus has put that question in my mind:

WHAT ARE WE DOING?!

So what does any of this have to do with songwriting and sharing music? Well, I’ve encountered enough bullying that I’ve wanted to quit at times. It’s crushed my spirit and broken my heart when I’ve done my very best and prayerfully answered others and their response in turn has been full of false accusations and anger. It’s made me wonder if this is even worthwhile. But it is. And I’m slowly coming to find what God’s way through it all is for me. It gets clearer every day and I’m thankful for that.

Wrapping things up, I would just encourage each of us to examine our own hearts and motives while posting and commenting. Are your words helping or hurting? And it goes without saying that all this instruction from God’s Word applies to any conversation, not just the ones online. =)

Continuing on in the strength of the Lord,
 ~ Adriel ~

The 4 Year Mark

4 years ago my life changed overnight. I went to bed normal. I woke up in the middle of the night and I was never the same. As I reflect on the desperate months following in which my health would plummet to a critical point, I can finally face the memories, the losses, the guilt, […]
